DOCUMENT ASSESSMENTS

I will

  • read your document.

  • write a detailed letter summarizing its strengths and weaknesses part by part. 

  • tailor an editorial plan to improve it or direct you on improving it yourself. 

 

Manuscript assessments don’t involve actual editing.  But you may find this service especially helpful if you have a budget restriction—an assessment will help you improve your manuscript so that you save time and money in editing and proofreading.

COPY EDITING

I will

  • correct errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, usage, and diction.

  • impose a mechanical style to ensure the consistent treatment of typography and other visual elements in your document.

  • check facts for accuracy.

  • check correlating parts in your document for correct correlation.

  • flag any questionable material I might find. 

  • if asked, typecode typographic and visual elements, such as artwork or illustrations, to assist a typesetter with placement and treatment.

How can I save more on editing fees?

To save time and help me concentrate on the harder-to-find issues in your manuscript, you can go through it first to resolve any grammar, syntax, and punctuation issues you may notice.  The following tips will help you get started:

First, you’ll need some books.  Buy a reputable dictionary, editing handbook, grammar reference, and style guide.  Email me for my recommended reads.

1.

Start by making a style sheet for your manuscript.  Editors use style sheets to keep a record of unfamiliar spellings and track typographic rules to maintain editing consistency. 

2.

Read slowly and carefully, checking each punctuation mark and word you suspect may be spelled incorrectly, as well as anything else that tingles your senses.  Use your dictionary and grammar reference to help you.

3.

Make sure each sentence is a logical sequel of the previous one.  Think of where you leave your reader at the end of each sentence, and ask yourself whether your reader can comfortably jump to the next one.  Move sentences and paragraphs around where necessary to improve logic and flow. 

4.

Cut useless words and expressions to shorten long, awkward sentences.  Concise sentences are much easier for readers to grasp than longer ones.

5.

PAYMENTS & DEPOSITS

  • A $100 minimum fee applies to all services.

  • I send invoices through email and only accept Interac e-Transfers and PayPal payments.  You’ll be able to pay your invoices in your inbox. 

  • For longer projects, I require a 25% deposit before work begins, 25% when work is half done, and the balance once work is finished. 

  • For shorter projects, I require a 50% deposit before work begins and the balance once work is finished.

  • I hold deposits in trust until I earn them.  Any unearned portion of a deposit is refundable.

  • Payment schedules will be established in writing before reading and signing a contract.
